Moving This Year? Here are Some Great Tips – Part 1 : The Planning Process

Spring is just around the corner and traditionally this is the start of the moving season. If you are planning to move, now is the time to start planning, because the more prepared you are, the easier it will be to carry out the move.

Here are some really useful tips on how you should plan your move:

Get organized early.
Start planning today and you have between 30-60 days to ensure that everything on moving day runs smoothly. Moving is very stressful, and if you are not well organized, you will experience a lot of mental anguish and pain.

A useful strategy is to create a countdown list and itemize everything you need to accomplish week by week.

Minimize as much as possible.
If you have lived in your current home for many years, chances are that you will have accumulated a lot of “excessive junk”.  Now is the time to donate, throw out or sell those items that you will not need to take to your new home. You can also purge while you pack a few weeks before the actual move, but do it now if you have the time.

Choose the right moving company.
If you are going to use professional movers, start making appointments and get quotes from at least 3 licensed movers. Remember, most moving companies will be fully booked during the busy spring season. Now is the time to book with a reputable moving company before they get fully booked.

You don’t want to trust your belongings with a “fly-by-night” unlicensed crew, when there is nothing else out there.

Start collecting your packing supplies.
Whether you chose new boxes or old ones, make sure you have a variety of sizes to accommodate the different items you need to move. Many moving companies will provide you with boxes, some at a cost, and those who don’t charge, usually build the cost into their quote.  If you start collecting from now, you will save time and money. The last thing you should be doing before moving week is dashing to local supermarkets and the like, desperately seeking boxes.

Moving to a new home is exciting, but the event is one of the most stressful ones in life. It is important to make sure it does not become an overwhelming experience – so plan your move months in advance.
